Local Action
Climate Action KC Advocacy Information
Climate Action KC is committed to helping you speak up for Climate Action! Our local elected officials need to hear our support for these policies. Maybe you’re a regular visitor to your City Hall, or maybe you’ve never been inside. Either way, we hope you use or share the steps below to help build even more momentum around progress in our region!
- Find a Meeting
Visit the City/County Government website, search for the governing body and find meeting agendas. If you don’t see an agenda, it may not be posted yet. Sometimes meeting agendas are posted just a day or two ahead of the meeting date.
- Meetings are open to the public. You can attend!
Contact the City/County Clerk if you’d like to learn about the format of each meeting type (committee meeting, legislative meeting, etc.)
- Make a Public Comment
If you’d like to make a public comment, there will be an opportunity for comments on the agenda. Usually you are asked to state your name and city of residence. Limit your comments to three minutes or less – it does not have to be long to make an impact!
- Don’t wait for the perfect day to go to a meeting – choose any time and share your thoughts!
If you are there to speak on an issue that is on the agenda, you will speak at that time, but you may speak on any topic during the general Public Comment section of the agenda.
- Be respectful
Thank the elected officials for serving the community, and especially thank them for the actions that you support – just a simple thank you goes a long way.
- Visit the City/County Government website, search for the governing body and find the email addresses of the representatives you’d like to email.
- A City/County is typically divided into wards or districts. Find a district/ward map on the website or call the City Clerk to determine who represents you specifically. You may write to just them, or you may copy the Mayor or Chair, or the full council. You may also copy the City/County Administrator/Manager
- Local sustainability/environmental commissions

If you’re ready to take any of these actions but have questions about how to go about it or are not quite sure what to say, please reach out! Climate Action KC is happy to support you! A little action can make a big difference and advocacy gets easier the more you do it!
