Market Transformation Programs and Initiatives

According to the region’s most recent greenhouse gas inventory, 63% of Kansas City’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to the building demands of high energy heating, cooling, refrigeration, and other related building emissions. The next largest category, transportation, accounts for 31% of the region’s emissions. Due to the impact of emissions from buildings and transportation, CAKC has created the Building Energy Exchange Kansas City and Plug-In KC as two solutions to address these emissions sources.

Since its inception in 2020, CAKC has proven that its nimble cross-sector approach works and it is now uniquely positioned to act as a force-multiplier, scaling its efforts to engage larger audiences, experts, elected officials, and citizens.

Regional Climate Action Plan

In 2020, CAKC and the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) developed the Kansas City Regional Climate Action Plan (CAP) in tandem with hundreds of interested community members, stakeholders and decision-makers. Additionally, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, a worldwide collaboration across 10,000 municipalities, helped guide the plan’s development as well. The CAP aims to transform the metropolitan area into a more resilient, equitable and healthy community. Formally adopted by jurisdictions and institutions representing over 80 percent of the region’s population.

The Climate Action Playbook, drafted by municipal leaders, climate advocates and community volunteers, contains climate solutions for implementation by cities, counties and school districts, and builds upon already locally-demonstrated successes.
